SEVEN

Mac yawned as she stood in front of the French press. She leaned against the kitchen counter and closed her eyes, inhaling the aroma of brewing coffee. “Four minutes,” she murmured.

“What are you doing?”

“Huh?” Her eyes flew open, and she whirled around, planting her face into Gabe’s chest.

She jumped away, gripping the counter to steady herself. Nothing like a little humiliation to immediately wake her up. He’d recently showered and changed clothes, and he smelled good. She’d forgotten just how good. Like soap and toothpaste and Gabe.

“Easy there.” Amusement filled his eyes as he nodded toward the fancy coffee machine on the counter. “Why didn’t you just use that?”

“Are you kidding? Look at all those buttons. It would have taken me an hour to figure it out. I need coffee now.” A soft beep sounded, and Mac stopped the stove timer. “This takes four minutes.” She gently pressed the plunger on the French press until the filter reached the bottom of the beaker. “All done. Want some?”

“No, thanks. I like a challenge. I think I remember how this works.”

“Good.” Ben’s voice rang out. “Then you can make me a cup, too.”

The two joked and exchanged barbs as Gabe made coffee, leaving Mac an opportunity to observe the brothers.

Ben looked like a soldier, tall and lean, while Gabe was solid all over and a little nerdy around the edges with his black-framed glasses.

“Here you go,” Gabe said as he slid a steaming mug on the table in front of his brother. “I’m taking my coffee with me. I promised Winston a stroll.”

Ben sipped his coffee. Once the front door closed, he turned to Mac. “How are you doing, Mackenzie?”

“Better. I got a few hours of sleep in. Funny, how it’s easier to sleep when I know there are people in the house who have my back.”

“Sleep is good.” He sipped his coffee and eyed her over the rim of the mug, a question in his eyes.

“What is it?” she asked.

“Gabe is concerned that discussing the mission in Toronto may trigger some mental-health issues.”

The words gave her pause. Gabe had put himself into the role of her protector and she neither needed nor wanted one. Maybe if she wasn’t a trained agent, she’d be flattered. Instead, she found herself annoyed. A healing leg injury was no reason to assume she couldn’t take care of herself. She needed his help to figure out what was going on, not because she couldn’t protect herself.

“Mackenzie?” Ben asked. “Are you okay?”

“Yes. I’m fine,” she said. “To answer your question, Gabe could be right. I can’t say for certain what response might be triggered, but I want to go ahead. I can’t live like this. On the run. Not knowing who or why someone wants me dead. I want my life back.”

“I agree with you, one hundred percent. The sooner we figure out why you’re a liability to someone, the sooner we can target your unknown enemy.”

“Thank you, Ben. I really appreciate your help.” She searched for the right words.
